Police arrest suspected smuggler in Nordenham
In the fight against international smuggling gangs, investigators from Munich have arrested a 25-year-old man in Nordenham. The man is said to have been active in an international smuggling network since at least 2022, as the Munich Federal Police Criminal Investigation Department announced on Wednesday. As the head of a group of smugglers, the suspect is said to have helped migrants enter the country illegally on the so-called Balkan route, on the border between Serbia and Hungary.
Around 40 officers from the Federal Police, including special forces, were involved in the operation in the district of Wesermarsch. The police also seized cell phones, storage media and written documents. The investigation and evaluation of the evidence seized is reportedly still ongoing.
This arrest highlights the complex interplay between crime and migration, as the suspected smuggler is accused of facilitating the illegal entry of migrants. The arrest in Nordenham could potentially deter other smugglers involved in migration-related crimes.
