Ice hockey - Polar Bears back at the top of the table thanks to "character win"

The Eisbären Berlin have left their slump in form behind them. Thanks to a six-point weekend, the team is back at the top of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) table. "That was a great character win for us," said coach Serge Aubin after the 3:1 away win against Adler Mannheim on Sunday evening. "We found a way to win. That was really important because we have some injured players at the moment. I think we learned a lot from a game like this."

After three clear defeats, the Berliners got back on track on Friday with a 3:1 win against Löwen Frankfurt and improved further in Mannheim. "That was important for us after we had lost a bit of ground," said national player Marcel Noebels on Magentasport. "We did a lot of things right because we played easier."

Coach Aubin also praised the determined style of play: After a pressure-packed opening phase by Mannheim, his team regained control through "not particularly pretty, but effective moves", he explained. The Canadian also emphasized the successful shorthanded play, the once again strong goalkeeper Jake Hildebrand and the overall consistent defensive work. "We were hit by some waves, but we defended the center pretty well," said Aubin after the eighth away win in a row.

Noebels is now hoping for continuity after the recent improvement in performance: "We have to keep it up," he demanded. "It's no good if we fall back into the old pattern next weekend."
