"Points lost": Hertha annoyed by carelessness
The Hertha BSC fans showed no signs of disappointment, but the players of the second-division club found it harder to do so. "It definitely feels like a defeat," said attacker Fabian Reese after the 2:2 (2:1) draw against Karlsruher SC on Saturday evening. "Completely annoying, definitely two points lost," goalkeeper Tjark Ernst was also annoyed.
The Berliners are treading water in the table and have lost touch with the upper regions of the table for the time being. An own goal from Deyovaisio Zeefuik (10th minute) gave the visitors the lead in front of 58,851 spectators. Fabian Reese (29') and Florian Niederlechner (42') scored for Hertha before Leon Jensen (81') equalized.
It was the second draw in a row for the capital club, who remain twelfth in the table. KSC's point win pushed Schalke 04 into 16th place in the relegation places. "Today we have to accept the day as it is, but I see minus two points," said a visibly angry coach Pal Dardai about the two draws against Rostock and KSC.
The fact that the Hertha fans still celebrated after the game had to do with the special atmosphere. The decades-long fan friendship between the two clubs was celebrated in style. After a celebration in the exhibition halls, both fan camps marched to the match together. Before kick-off, a sea of blue and white flags created a great atmosphere in the darkened stadium. Even afterwards, the atmosphere remained exceptional.
The opening phase clearly belonged to the visitors. Hertha completely overslept the first twenty minutes. Lars Stindl broke through in the penalty area following a corner and pulled the ball sharply into the five-yard box. Zeefuik's attempted clearance ended up in his own goal.
The capital club struggled in attack against Karlsruhe, but the first successful attack brought the equalizer. Marton Dardai found Reese with a great opening pass between the lines. The ball came back down the wing to the 25-year-old, who headed in from a difficult position.
Shortly before the break, KSC keeper Patrick Drewes was unable to consistently clear a corner. Hertha striker Haris Tabakovic acrobatically chipped the ball just in front of goal, where Niederlechner headed home.
Reese (61), Tabakovic (78) and Klemens (79) missed the decision from the best positions in the second half. But KSC also remained dangerous. Hertha became careless. A double deflected shot from substitute Jensen secured the draw.
Hertha BSC's draw against Karlsruher SC in Bundesliga 2 resulted in a sense of frustration among the players, with Fabian Reese admitting, "Completely annoying, definitely two points lost." Tjark Ernst also shared this sentiment, stating, "It definitely feels like a defeat."
