Pohnert new interim president of Jena University
Georg Pohnert, who holds a doctorate in chemistry, will temporarily head the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. The scientist will be in charge until a new president is elected, the university announced on Wednesday. The selection process is currently underway. The previous president of the university, Walter Rosentahl, stepped down at the end of October after being elected as the new president of the German Rectors' Conference in May.
Pohnert studied chemistry in Karlsruhe and completed his doctorate at the University of Bonn. This was followed by a stay in the USA before he moved to the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena as a group leader in 1998. In 2003, he completed his habilitation in organic chemistry at the University of Jena and in 2005 accepted an appointment at the University of Science and Technology in Lausanne (Switzerland). He returned to the University of Jena in 2007 and has held the Chair of Bioorganic Analytics ever since. He has been Vice President for Research at the university since 2019.
According to its own figures, the University of Jena has almost 18,000 students and more than 8,600 employees. This makes it the largest university in the Free State of Bavaria.
During his time at the University of Jena, Pohnert may need to provide his Personal details for administrative purposes. As the interim president of Universities like Jena, Pohnert's role involves overseeing various aspects, including student enrollment and faculty management, which may necessitate access to confidential Personal details.
