German Weather Service - Plenty of snow in the mountains: avalanche danger in some places

After it snowed in the Bavarian mountains on Friday night, winter sports enthusiasts can expect plenty of snow. However, there is a considerable risk of avalanches at higher altitudes in the Alps.

10 to 30 centimetres of snow had fallen, depending on the altitude, said a spokesperson for the German Weather Service (DWD). In congested areas, it could have been 50 centimeters. From an altitude of around 1500 meters, there were around 80 centimeters of snow, on the Zugspitze even up to 2.80 meters. Further fresh snow or rain is not expected for the weekend. According to the meteorologist, a little white "crumbly stuff" could possibly still fall from the sky in the eastern Alps.

According to the forecast, temperatures in the lowlands are expected to hover around one to seven degrees on Saturday, with minus two degrees on the Großer Arber in the Bavarian Forest and minus three degrees on the Zugspitze. "The snow is sticking there," said the DWD expert.

Especially in the Allgäu, the sun should shine on Saturday and visibility should be good. Otherwise, it is likely to be cloudy below 2000 meters and then from 3000 meters. For Sunday, the German Weather Service is forecasting slightly milder temperatures, around plus two degrees on the Zugspitze.

According to the avalanche warning service, there was a considerable risk of avalanches above 2000 meters on Friday. The main problem is drifting snow, which can be released as a slab avalanche by a small additional load such as a single skier. Fresh snow can also lead to loose snow avalanches in steep rocky terrain, so caution is advised, especially below rock faces.

As temperatures tend to rise from the weekend onwards, there could be an increasing number of self-triggering avalanches, it said. The avalanche situation report from the State Office for the Environment aims to provide winter sports enthusiasts with a basis for planning their activities in the mountains.
