Court case - Pleas for alleged attempted murder of police officer

Half a year after a nearly fatal attack on a policeman in Unterfranken, the trial is coming to an end. On Thursday, the defense and prosecution presented their closing arguments before the Würzburg Regional Court. The prosecutor claims that the defendant pointed the stolen pistol at the police officer. The police officer remained unharmed, but the 24-year-old defendant is accused of stamping on him and kicking him several times in the head, which left the officer motionless on the ground.

The prosecution is charging attempted murder. "I believe the conditions for attempted murder have been met," said the prosecutor. The defense attorney for the policeman involved also argued for a conviction on attempted murder charges.

However, the defense sees no intent to kill and is therefore advocating for a sentence of four years for grievous bodily harm. The judgment is expected on Thursday afternoon.

The 24-year-old is accused of resisting a police check in Ochsenfurt (Würzburg district) in January, leading to the altercation. The seriously injured policeman eventually shot the man in the right leg, ending the confrontation. During the trial, the defendant asked for forgiveness. "I don't see genuine remorse from him," responded the prosecutor.

  1. The attack took place in Unterfranken, which is located in the northern part of Lower Franconia, a region in Bavaria.
  2. The public prosecutor's office in Würzburg is responsible for leading the court case against the defendant.
  3. The defense attorney argued that the defendant's plea should result in a conviction for grievous bodily harm, rather than attempted murder, as they claim there was no intent to kill.
  4. If found guilty, the defendant could face up to 15 years in prison for attempted murder, as per the German Criminal Code, which applies to all regions in Germany, including Bavaria and Lower Franconia.
