A woman and a man, both in their early thirties, are on trial at a district court for allegedly plotting to set fire to a railway underpass in Berlin-Adlershof. Authorities believe that on the night of February 16, 2023, they went to the location with the intention of causing major disruptions to train services by burning it down with gasoline. They also communicated with others through walkie-talkies.

The accused are thought to be connected to the left-wing scene. During the trial at the Tiergarten District Court on Monday, they remained silent about the accusations.

Police found suspicious individuals near the tracks around 0:15 a.m. on the same day. They were quickly apprehended by additional law enforcement officers. The accused were found to be carrying a canister of gasoline, rubber gloves, two walkie-talkies, and a list detailing information about civilian police vehicles in Berlin.

The defense attorneys argue that the police may have jumped to the conclusion of an arson plot because of their clients' affiliation with the left-wing scene. The prosecution's indictment is said to be based on incorrect facts and a flawed argument. DNA evidence may have been misinterpreted, according to one defense lawyer.

The court has granted the defense's request to lift the house arrest with reporting obligations against the accused, as the judge doesn't see them as a flight risk anymore. The trial, which is scheduled for six more hearing days, will resume on June 6.
