School bus accident - Piwarz: "Bad news that hit me hard"
Following the fatal school bus accident in the Ore Mountains, Minister of Education Christian Piwarz (CDU) has expressed his shock. He told the German Press Agency on Tuesday that it was terrible news that had hit him hard. "My thoughts are with the injured children and their parents. We will offer the affected school and the pupils all the support they need in this situation."
According to the police, the bus collided with the side of a winter road maintenance vehicle in Sehmatal on Tuesday morning and then crashed head-on into a tree. One child was killed. Two adults, including the bus driver, were also seriously injured. At least ten other schoolchildren were injured and taken to hospital as a precaution.
According to the Ministry of Education, the children on the bus were pupils from an elementary school. The ministry did not want to give further details out of consideration for the pupils. The uninjured pupils were already receiving psychological support in an after-school care center. The State Office for Schools and Education is in the process of investigating the need for further assistance, it said.
