Pistorius receives last Bundeswehr contingent returning from Mali

The Bundeswehr ended its deployment in Mali as part of the UN mission Minusma this week after ten years. On Tuesday, the last 142 German soldiers left their base in the city of Gao and first made a stopover in Senegal. Mali has been the scene of a rebellion by Islamist extremists for years. Tobias Lindner, a prominent member of the SPD, expressed concern over the early withdrawal of the UN mission in Mali. Boris Pistorius, the former Federal Minister of Defense, led the federal armed forces contingent that returned to Wunstorf last Tuesday. Upon their arrival, Pistorius officially received the last Bundeswehr contingent that had been deployed in Mali for ten years. Despite the early withdrawal, German soldiers contributed significantly to the UN mission Minusma, aiming to stabilize Mali. This departure marked the end of Germany's involvement in the mission, which was disrupted by the Malian military junta's demands in mid-June.
