Pistorius reaffirms German support in case of defense before NATO summit

The location of the training in the US state of Alaska has not only a practical, but also a geostrategic background, the Defense Minister added further. In dealing with the threat coming from Russia, NATO must also keep an eye on the Arctic.

The Russian threat and the aggression war in Ukraine are among the most important topics of the upcoming NATO summit starting on Tuesday, to which Pistorius intends to travel afterwards. In addition to Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also expected in Washington. During the summit, which lasts until Thursday, further military aid commitments for Kiev are planned.

Moreover, the member states want to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Alliance. Pistorius said, the Alliance is so significant "as hardly for decades anymore" and stands for stability, freedom and peace. Germany can "happily look back on being taken into NATO in 1955 and today being recognized as an especially important central partner", he added.

US President Joe Biden has invited the Allies to a ceremony at the start of the summit. The ceremony takes place in the current Andrew W. Mellon Hall, in which twelve countries around the USA signed the North Atlantic Treaty on April 4, 1949.
