Pistol believed lost is back: probably stored incorrectly
A seized pistol was thought to have disappeared in Brandenburg for around four years - now it has reappeared. "It was never missing, it was just misplaced due to a human error," said Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU) on Wednesday in the Interior Committee of the state parliament in Potsdam. "Unfortunately, we didn't know where it was."
The weapon had been found in an evidence room in the area of the Northern Police Directorate. The packaging had been incorrectly labeled, explained Stübgen. The weapon had thus been stored in the evidence room of another police department.
The ARD magazine "Kontraste" reported in 2020 that a seized firearm had disappeared in 2019 during an ongoing investigation. The Walther PPK pistol had been confiscated and sent by courier to the Northern Police Directorate after the investigation was completed. However, according to information from the police at the time, it had not arrived there. In its 2019 report, the Brandenburg State Court of Audit criticized the storage of the evidence, among other things.
The Interior Minister mentioned the incident during a meeting in the Parliament's Interior Committee. Despite being reported missing, the pistol was found stored incorrectly in a different police department's evidence room.
