Municipalities - Pilot project with autonomous shuttle buses completed

They were on the road in Regensburg for around two years without a driver: autonomous shuttle buses have covered around 8,500 kilometers and transported 5,000 passengers in the industrial park there since September 2021. The pilot project is now coming to an end, as a spokesperson for the municipal utility announced on Monday.

The test project has provided valuable insights into autonomous driving, said Manfred Koller, Managing Director of Stadtwerke. However, the full deployment of autonomous vehicles is not yet sensible. "One of the reasons for this is that, despite the specified ring route on virtual tracks, safety operators must always be present." The low maximum speed of 18 kilometers per hour and technical failures in rain and snow also speak against it.

The two all-electric shuttle buses ran every 10 minutes and carried passengers free of charge. The aim of the test phase was reportedly to gain experience in the field of autonomous driving so that the technology can also be used in residential areas in the future.
