Pillnitz Castle and its Surrounding Gardens Temporarily Shut Down due to Weather-Related Damages

The Pillnitz Castle Park and the Expansive Garden serve as leisure spots and notable tourist destinations in Dresden. The heritage structures occasionally face harm due to climate change's impacts.

On a stormy Sunday evening, hail, strong winds, and heavy rain wreaked havoc on the historic park grounds of Schloss Pillnitz and the Großer Garten in Dresden. The paths were obliterated, meadows were submerged, tree branches snapped off, and potted plants tumbled over, as informed by Saxony's Palace Administration. The ground floor of the Neues Palais in Pillnitz was inundated due to continuous rain and overflowing drains, prompting immediate drying efforts.

The administration reported, "Cleanup efforts are still underway." Consequently, Schlosspark Pillnitz, museums, orangery, and palm house will remain shut on Monday, with a tentative reopening scheduled for Tuesday. Interestingly, in July 2023, a local storm tore through the 18th-century complex, causing damage to over 80 trees.

Within the Großer Garten, the stream flowing through the park burst its banks, submerging meadows and damaging walkways. Sections of the park where tree stability is compromised due to softened soil have been sectioned off, with a stern warning issued against walking or loitering near them. The railway track in the park is also affected by the flooding.

The harsh winds and heavy rain from the storm were reminiscent of a hurricane, causing further destruction. Unfortunately, the Hurricane-like conditions led to additional damage to the already affected areas, including the railway track.
