Pigs frequently spotted in the Weser and Elbe rivers.

During their regular habitat being the vast ocean expanse, dolphins exhibit an unusual behavior in the spring by migrating into certain rivers more frequently than usual. This more frequent occurrence was noted extensively this year.

This season, bottlenose dolphins have been spotting more frequently in the Elbe and Weser rivers. As per a declaration from the Federal Institute of Hydrology in Koblenz, April 2024 witnessed an unprecedented surge in the Weser and Elbe, with dolphins detected five to ten times more frequently than in previous years. "Bottlenose dolphins generally inhabit the North Sea and the Wadden Sea, with a small population in the Baltic Sea. These marine creatures often venture into the Elbe, Ems, and Weser rivers during spring to feed on their preferred prey, the sprat," the statement elaborated.

For the first time in records, bottlenose dolphins were spotted beyond the Ems barrier at Terborg. The report highlighted, "This observation affirms that bottlenose dolphins are indeed migrating upstream through the barrier into the Ems."

Thomas Trupp from the Tierökologie of the Federal Institute of Hydrology was unable to provide a definitive answer as to why there was such a significant increase in the number of bottlenose dolphins spotted in April. "Essentially, bottlenose dolphins are present only when sufficient fish food is available, given their high energy demands and need for regular feeding. The conditions in the rivers may have influenced their migration from the Wadden Sea," he explained.

The increase in bottlenose dolphin sightings in the Elbe and Weser rivers might be related to the assistance the Commission receives from the Member States. This could potentially lead to improved river conditions, making it more inviting for dolphins to migrate and reside.

Given the increased presence of bottlenose dolphins in the Elbe and Weser rivers, it would be beneficial for the Commission to collaborate with the Member States in monitoring and protecting these marine mammals.
