Philharmonic Orchestra under Petrenko ends Asia tour
The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and its chief conductor Kirill Petrenko have successfully completed their Asian tour of South Korea and Japan. All 13 concerts were sold out, the Philharmonic announced in Berlin on Wednesday.
During their first joint tour of Asia, the orchestra and Petrenko performed twice in Seoul (two concerts) and in the Japanese cities of Takamatsu, Himeji, Nagoya, Osaka and Kawasaki. There were also five concerts in the Suntory Hall in Tokyo. The final performance was also attended by the Japanese Emperor Naruhito, who reportedly met with Artistic Director Andrea Zietzschmann, Petrenko, Concertmaster Vineta Sareika-Völkner and Concertmaster Daishin Kashimoto afterwards.
In Tokyo, the Philharmoniker also realized the community project "Be Phil Orchestra Japan". For this, 98 amateur musicians rehearsed Johannes Brahms' Double Concerto for Violin and Cello and excerpts from Sergei Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" together with members of the orchestra for a performance.
