News Outlets Revamped: A Transformation in Storytelling - Peter Urban marks a milestone: Fifty years at NDR 2.

Peter Urban, a German ESC commentator celebrates a significant milestone this Thursday, as he has been on air with radio station NDR 2 since May 1974. NDR announced this on Wednesday in Hamburg. At 8:05 pm on May 30, Urban will look back on 50 years of on-air experience with NDR 2.

Urban's first radio format at NDR 2 was called "Music for Young People." As a passionate music lover, he used to bring mostly soul, blues, and reggae records into the studio on the Hamburg Rothenbaumchaussee, with an "ugly purple plastic record box." The Staples Singers, Bobby Womack, Millie Jackson, and Esther Phillips were some of the artists he introduced to listeners. On May 9, 1974, Urban made the German radio premiere of the later reggae world star Bob Marley on this station.

Fifty years later, Urban is now a radio legend, one of the truly credible music authorities in this era of streaming algorithms and social media trends. NDR program director Torsten Engel said, "Many people in the north have undoubtedly been influenced by the music that Peter Urban has presented over the past five decades. He has helped shape shows like 'The Club,' 'Nightclub,' and 'Soultrain,' as well as the 'NDR 2 Soundcheck.' It's only natural that he's been hosting the show that bears his name, the 'Peter Urban Show,' at NDR 2 for several years now."

Besides numerous radio shows, Urban has also covered global music events. He has commented on worldwide shows like Live Aid 1985 and the concert in support of Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday. Plus, he has interviewed and profiled world music stars such as Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, David Bowie, and Yoko Ono.

Urban also became the voice of the Eurovision Song Contest in Germany in 1997. He's commented on the entertainment shows for the German audience 25 times, most recently in 2023.
