Peter Frank elected Federal Constitutional Court judge

The Federal Council has elected Attorney General Peter Frank as a new judge at the Federal Constitutional Court. The proposal was accepted unanimously, as announced by Bundesrat President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) on Friday after the vote. Frank is to succeed Peter Müller. The former Minister-President of the Saarland came to the Federal Constitutional Court in December 2011 and has now reached the end of his 12-year term of office.

Frank has been Federal Public Prosecutor General at the Federal Court of Justice since October 5, 2015 and is therefore head of the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office. At 47, he was the youngest Attorney General when he took office. Public statements by Frank are few and far between. Every now and then, the chief prosecutor gives interviews. He worked on improving cooperation between investigating authorities. One focus of his work is the fight against terrorism. Recently, the number of investigations in this area has risen significantly.

Frank is regarded as experienced, resilient, sociable and easy-going. He studied law in Würzburg and Munich, passed both state law examinations with top marks and obtained a doctorate in criminal procedure ("summa cum laude"). He then worked as a public prosecutor in Munich and later for the Bavarian Ministry of Justice.

The Federal Council's decision to elect Attorney General Peter Frank as a judge at the Federal Constitutional Court will require him to disclose his personal details to the Justice department for verification. The upcoming vacancy at the Federal Constitutional Court, following Peter Müller's departure, will be filled by Frank, who has experience as the Federal Public Prosecutor General at the Federal Court of Justice and has been involved in managing cases against terrorism-related parties.
