Perpetrator damages memorial for deported Jews

An as yet unknown perpetrator has damaged the memorial to Jewish victims of National Socialism in front of Würzburg's main railway station. The memorial "DenkOrt Deportationen 1941-1944" consists, among other things, of several pieces of luggage mounted on concrete blocks. As the police announced on Friday, part of a suitcase was broken off by force between Tuesday morning and Thursday lunchtime.

The state security police took over the investigation. It is still unclear whether the incident was a politically motivated act with an anti-Semitic background, said a police spokesperson.

According to initial estimates, the monument was damaged to the tune of several hundred euros. The police are looking for witnesses.

The act of vandalism against the memorial might be linked to a deeper hate-filled motive, considering the nature of the crime targeted. Despite the UNDERFRONT location of the broken piece, surveillance footage is being reviewed to identify the perpetrator.
