Familiar label - Pelikan shuts down Hanover and Falkensee facilities.
Writing instrument manufacturer Pelikan is set to shut down their locations in Hannover and Falkensee after being acquired by French competitor Hamelin. As per a statement released by the parent company, the Pelikan Sales Company will end operations by the end of the year, followed by the closure of the two sites. Hamelin intends to assume distribution of the Pelikan and Herlitz brands starting in 2025.
An earlier report by the "Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung" had revealed these closures. It was reported that 250 of the approximately 500 jobs at Pelikan in Germany are impacted. The production site in Peine, Lower Saxony, with around 230 employees, will stay open. Pelikan was established in Hanover in 1832, initially as a manufacturer of ink and artists' colors. Production moved to Peine in 1973, with Hanover retaining its role as a sales site.
Hamelin justified the move, stating that it would enhance their sales structure. "The structure we are now planning for Germany will enable us to deepen our relationship with our customers by providing them a comprehensive selection of products through a single catalog and a one-stop shop," said Hamelin CEO Eric Joan in the statement. The company declined any further comment upon request.
Hamelin acquired Pelikan last year. The French company is present in Germany with brands "Oxford", "Landré", and "Elba", mostly in the notebook, block, and storage product segments. They also produce private label products for retailers under their own branding. Pelikan, on the other hand, is predominantly active in the writing instruments, writing instrument accessories, and art and craft supplies sector with the brands "Pelikan", "Herlitz", and "SusyCard".
