Pedestrian dies in accident in Berlin - police investigate connection with motorcade

The alleged 26-year-old cause of the accident fled the scene on Neukölln's Hermannstraße initially, as stated by the police. However, he presented himself at a police station approximately one and a half hours later. The investigations into whether he had participated in a "Jubilee celebration" in relation to the EM prior to the accident were still ongoing.

Not only in Neukölln was the victory of the Turkish national team against the Czech team on Wednesday evening celebrated with car processions. Charlottenburg's Breitscheidplatz also attracted a large crowd - according to the police, there were around 4500 people and 500 cars on the square and in the surrounding streets.

Some of the revelers had climbed on lamps, while others had set off fireworks, it was reported. A man on the Kurfürstendamm had shot several times into the air with a revolver. The weapon was confiscated by the officers.

Some people had thrown glass and plastic bottles towards the response teams, resulting in a police officer being lightly injured, the police continued. Five other officers were injured while attempting to clear the road to reopen it for traffic. They, along with their colleague, were able to continue their duty.

Around 1:00 AM, traffic resumed around the Breitscheidplatz. The police recorded a total of 20 criminal complaints, including for particularly serious breaches of the peace, insults, grievous bodily harm, and violations of the Explosives Act.

  1. Despite the chaotic celebrations on Breitscheidplatz, pedestrians managed to navigate the crowded area with caution.
  2. The police in Berlin's Neukölln district expressed concern over the increasing number of accidents involving motorcades during celebratory events.
  3. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a car swerve off the road on Hermannstraße, causing a significant impact and leading to a fatality.
  4. The police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from Breitscheidplatz and neighboring districts for any context or clues related to the accident.
  5. The motorcade that was present at Breitscheidplatz during the celebrations was organized by a local sports club to show their support for the Turkish team.
  6. The police in Berlin urge the public to exercise caution and respect for traffic regulations, especially during events that may attract large crowds.
