The 26-year-old driver of the car fled immediately from the crime scene, but he turned himself in to the police about one and a half hours later at a station. It remains to be investigated whether he had participated in a "celebration" in honor of the EM (European Championship) beforehand, the police said.

At several locations in Berlin, Turkish fans celebrated the victory of their national team at the EM against the Czech Republic on Wednesday evening. Some did so with car processions. The Turkish national team had previously defeated the Czech Republic 2:1.

The accident occurred in the Neukölln district of Berlin, involving a car and a pedestrian. The context of the incident is under investigation by the police. Despite fleeing initially, the 26-year-old driver eventually surrendered to the police in relation to the fatal accident. Witnesses reported seeing a motorcade of cars celebrating the EM victory in the same district around the time of the incident.
