Middle Eastern Dispute - Peace Prize conferred to deceased activist Silver.
In 2023, the Hessian Peace Prize is set to be posthumously given to Canadian-Israeli peace activist Vivian Silver. This marks the first time in the Hessian Peace Prize's history that a recipient will receive the award after their passing. The announcement was made by Hesse Parliament President Astrid Wallmann on a recent Monday. Silver dedicated most of her life, spanning over five decades, to promoting harmonious relations between Israelis and Palestinians through various organizations and projects. She served as a beacon of hope for countless individuals. This award honors her lifelong quest for peaceful reconciliation and carries the hope that her efforts will inspire many more.
Vivian Silver was born in 1949 in Winnipeg, Canada. During her academic pursuits, she initially visited Israel in 1968 and eventually relocated there with her husband and two sons. The kibbutz she inhabited was one of Hamas terrorists' initial targets during the October 7 attack. Regrettably, Silver was also one of the casualties.
The prize is valued at 25,000 euros and will be distributed on July 1 at the Hesse Parliament in Wiesbaden. One of her sons is expected to accept the award. German Ambassador to Israel Steffen Seibert will deliver the laudation at the ceremony.
