Customs - Peace light also burns in Thuringia
The Light of Peace from Bethlehem has once again arrived in Thuringia. Scouts handed over the candle to Minister President Bodo Ramelow (Left Party) in Erfurt on Thursday. The light is a symbol of hope for peace at Christmas. The official sending out ceremony for Thuringia is planned for the 3rd Advent in Erfurt Cathedral, as announced by the Evangelical Church in Central Germany (EKM). The motto of this year's campaign is "In search of peace".
The Peace Light campaign was launched in 1986 by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF). Since then, every year a child lights the flame in the grotto of Jesus' birth in Bethlehem, from where it is brought to Vienna by plane. German scouts have been distributing the Peace Light since 1994.
