The Euro 2024 event is approaching. - Pavlovic of Bayern fails to make it to the European Football Championship, but could still be nominated.
The German national team coach, Julian Nagelsmann, will be missing one of their young stars, Aleksandar Pavlovic, at the European Championship. The 20-year-old midfielder has fallen ill with an infection and can't make it to the tournament. A spokesperson from the German Football Association (DFB) confirmed the unfortunate news.
Instead of Pavlovic, Nagelsmann chose Emre Can from Borussia Dortmund to join the team. Pavlovic was busy recovering from his illness and couldn't make it to the German EM base in Herzogenaurach with the other 25 players by Monday. This caused a delay in the team's photo session. The training for the 22 field players and three goalkeepers went on as usual in the morning.
Emre Can is a more seasoned player than Leon Goretzka of FC Bayern Munich, who was also considered as an option. The 30-year-old player last played an international match in September 2021, during a 2-1 win over France under interim coach Rudi Völler. Nagelsmann, who took over as coach after that, hasn't selected Can until now. In the strict DFB hierarchy, Can will take Pavlovic's role as a backup player. Toni Kroos and Robert Andrich already have their spots, with Pascal Groß as the first substitute.
"It's really sad for Pavlo," said Pavlovic's Bayern teammate, Jamal Musiala. "We'll talk to him in the coming days." Pavlovic's chances of making a significant impact in the opening game against Scotland on Friday are slim.
Unfortunately, this injury streak adds to Pavlovic's misery with the German national team. He was unable to play in their last two games in March due to a jaw infection. Pavlovic was debating having surgery for his recurring problems during the summer. He recently joined the team's training late at the first training camp in Blankenhain and made his international debut as a substitute against Ukraine in Nuremberg last week. In spite of all this, Pavlovic remains hopeful and committed to playing for the German jersey.
