National policy - Path paved for Thuringia's 2024 budget

The Thuringian state budget for 2024, which has been controversial for weeks, has cleared the penultimate hurdle. The state parliament's budget committee has made a number of corrections to the government draft and is recommending that parliament approve the figures on December 20, committee chairman Volker Emde told the German Press Agency on Thursday.

With the changes made, the budget volume will fall from around 13.75 billion euros, which the red-red-green minority government had planned, to 13.54 billion euros. According to Emde, cuts of 256 million euros were decided. This was offset by some additional expenditure, meaning that the budget volume fell by around 200 million euros.

This was preceded by a compromise between the red-red-green minority coalition and the opposition CDU parliamentary group as well as several rounds of talks between Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (Left Party) and CDU parliamentary group leader Mario Voigt. The governing coalition has no majority of its own in the state parliament and is dependent on compromises with the CDU.
