Ship accident - Passenger ship crashes into railroad bridge on the Danube
On the Danube in Oberpfalz, a passenger ship collided with a bridge and had to halt its journey. According to the police, the ship hit the Schwabelweiser Railway Bridge in Regensburg on Sunday evening with its incomplete retracted steering house. The steering house was heavily pressed, and the ship had to anchor.
The bridge was closed for approximately three and a half hours, causing damage estimated at around 20,000 Euros to the structure. The ship sustained damage worth approximately 50,000 Euros, as reported by the police. The passengers spent the night on the ship until Monday and were then taken on buses for an outing. The ship was expected to resume its journey on Tuesday, said a police spokesperson.
The collision occurred near Bavaria's Oberpfalz region, specifically in Regensburg near the Schwabelweiser Railway Bridge. The incident disrupted Danube traffic significantly, affecting both shipping and regular railroad service. The police in Upper Palatinate are investigating the ship accident thoroughly. Due to the collision, several accidents were narrowly avoided by other ships in the area. The closure of the bridge led to detours and delays in passenger and freight transportation.
