Swabia - Partial opening of historic Augsburg railroad station after renovation

After around a decade, at least a large part of the rebuilt Augsburg main station was reopened on Friday. The core of the modernization project is the tunnel under the station for the streetcar. However, the new streetcar stop has not yet been completed and will not go into operation until later.

The overall project has long been controversial, particularly because the costs have more than doubled. Investments of at least 250 million euros are currently assumed.

As reported by Stadtwerke Augsburg, which is responsible for the conversion, the historic railroad building has been renovated and an intermediate level under the tracks and a pedestrian tunnel have also been created. Construction work officially began in 2015, but preparatory work around the main station had already been underway for around three years at the time.

The main project of the station conversion, the new streetcar stop on the second basement level, is currently still under construction. Global supply bottlenecks for technical components and the complex approval process have delayed the commissioning of the streetcar stop, explained a Stadtwerke spokesperson.

Augsburg's main station, built in the middle of the 19th century, is a listed building. According to Stadtwerke, the station building is the oldest metropolitan station still in use in Germany.
