- Partial closure of the Hamburg-Lübeck railway line due to construction work
Due to construction work on cables and overhead lines, there will be no through trains between Hamburg and Lübeck this weekend. The partial closure began in the afternoon, as a railway spokesman said. It is scheduled to last until Monday morning at 5:00 AM. In Hamburg-Tonndorf, a new electronic signal box is being built, which is intended to make train traffic more stable and punctual.
The regional trains of lines RE8, RE80, and RB81 will start or end in Ahrensburg (Stormarn district). Between the central bus station (ZOB) in Hamburg and Ahrensburg, replacement buses will be running. According to the railway app, the journey time will almost double to about an hour and a half. The trains between Hamburg and Lübeck are often used by holidaymakers and day-trippers to the Baltic Sea on summer weekends.
Faulty overhead line stops regional express
In the night, a faulty overhead line brought a regional express to a halt on the track. 23 passengers were stuck near Hamburg-Wandsbek station. A cable from the overhead line was hanging on the roof of the train, as the federal police reported.
The emergency services were alerted by residents who had heard a loud bang and seen flying sparks. There was no danger to the passengers as they were protected inside the regional train. The passengers and the train conductor could be safely evacuated and taken to Hamburg main station by bus.
Bahn: No connection to construction work
The federal police could not initially say why the overhead line failed. There are no indications that it was deliberately destroyed. A railway spokeswoman said there is no connection to the construction work, which is taking place at a different location.
The federal police were involved in managing the situation after a faulty overhead line caused a regional express to stop near Hamburg-Wandsbek station. Later, it was confirmed that a cable from the overhead line was hanging on the train's roof.
Despite the partial closure of trains between Hamburg and Lübeck due to construction work, the responsibility for the faulty overhead line incident lies with the railways themselves, as stated by the railway spokeswoman.
