Archaeology - Part of the Limes on the Rhine: replica of a watchtower restored

The replica of a Roman watchtower in Neuss has been extensively renovated. The tower is located near the Rhine opposite Düsseldorf and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Frontiers of the Roman Empire - Lower Germanic Limes". Information boards should also be erected next year, the city of Neuss announced on Wednesday on the occasion of the restoration. Similar signs are also to be installed at other locations in NRW that are part of the Limes World Heritage Site.

A small fort with soldiers was located next to the tower, whose predecessor was part of the Roman border guard along the Rhine 2000 years ago. It is difficult to make the former military installations for border protection visible. This is because the remains of the forts, legionary camps, training camps and settlements are mostly hidden in the ground and not visible. The Limes section in NRW stretches from Bonn to Kleve. There are sites in 19 municipalities, including Cologne, Duisburg, Wesel, Xanten and Neuss. In 2021, this part of the former Roman outer border became a World Heritage Site.
