Exercising One's Right to Elect Leaders Casting Ballots Is a Significant Act of Civic Duty - Parliamentary proceedings disrupted: Elections partially stalled

After multiple attempts, a deputy member from the Constitutional Court has been chosen, leaving other contenders behind. The seasoned judge, Ute Jung, received 61 'yes' votes and met the necessary two-thirds majority on Wednesday. She was a nominee from the Greens. A candidate for deputy member of the Constitutional Court didn't make it: The Greens' rival had 57 'yes' votes, 21 'no' votes, and three abstentions.

The Left's candidate for the parliamentary control commission, André Blechschmidt, also fell short. The seasoned MP is no longer eligible to pursue that committee. Blechschmidt received 59 'yes' votes, 20 'no' votes, and two abstentions.

Consequently, the panel designated to oversee the Constitutional Protection Agency can no longer be assembled. The commission is currently functioning with the same composition as the previous legislature. Based on the legal view of the Landtag administration, this arrangement is no longer tenable following the vote. The Left faction demanded a halt in the Landtag assembly to convene a caucus discussion.

As we approach the conclusion of the existing legislative period, a new Landtag election in Thuringia will take place on September 1st.

Thuringia's CDU faction leader considered the results as proof that his faction had worked together. "Red-Red-Green is engaging in a risky gambit with the democratic establishments that bind the nation," he declared in a statement. His faction had "left no stone unturned in attempting to fill the Thuringian Constitutional Court and the Parliamentary Control Commission."
