Parliamentary election in France: Highest voter turnout since 1981 by midday

At the election, a victory for the right-wing party Rassemblement National (RN) is apparent, having been the strongest force in the first round. However, it was uncertain whether the RN would achieve an absolute majority. Preliminary calculations are expected around 8:00 PM CET.

Should the RN not obtain an absolute majority, the formation of three blocs in the National Assembly is indicated, which could hinder the government and plunge the country into a political crisis.

French President Emmanuel Macron called for a new election after the triumph of the RN in the European elections on June 9. In the event of an absolute majority of right-wing populists in parliament after the Sunday vote, he might be compelled to appoint their party leader Jordan Bardella as prime minister.

  1. Voters cast their ballots at various polling stations across France until 19:00 on Sunday, with highTurnout expected, especially following the RN's success in the European election.
  2. Throughout the day, the tension at the polling stations was palpable, with the outcome of the Parliamentary election expected to be explosive.
  3. The election results at the polling station showed a narrow lead for the RN, but until the final ballot was counted, the party's chances of achieving an absolute majority remained uncertain.
  4. In the event that RN falls short of an absolute majority, they may still influence policy, as the formation of a center-left and center-right coalition in the National Assembly around noon on Monday is a possibility.
  5. The French political landscape will undergo significant changes following the Parliamentary election, regardless of whether the RN secures an absolute majority, as the presence of Rassemblement National in Parliament will be prominent since 1981.
