Parliament shows solidarity with Israel and Jewish life

On the 85th anniversary of the pogrom night of November 9, 1938, and with clear reference to the latest terrorist attack by the Islamist Hamas, the state parliament in Schwerin has symbolically declared its solidarity with Israel and Jewish life. With the organized attacks on synagogues and Jewish businesses in 1938, the National Socialists had driven forward the disenfranchisement and persecution of Jews and paved the way for the genocide of six million Jews. Out of responsibility for German history, what happened must not be forgotten. "The state parliament condemns all forms of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism," reads a cross-party motion that was passed by a large majority on Thursday.

In it, Parliament acknowledges "Germany's special responsibility towards the democratic and Jewish state of Israel". The brutal attack by Hamas with more than 1,400 dead is condemned as an inhumane act of violence. Executions and the abduction of innocent people could not be justified by anything. Speakers from all political groups called for decisive action by the constitutional state against Muslim demonstrators who cheer the murder of civilians on German streets and deny the state of Israel the right to exist. Representatives of both Jewish communities in the country followed the debate from the rostrum.

The Parliament's condemnation of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism stems from a deep understanding of Germany's historical relationship with Judaism and Israel. Throughout history, Judaism has faced numerous challenges, including the tragic events of the November 9, 1938 pogrom, which underscores the importance of this solidarity statement.
