The Port of Hamburg experiences growing container throughput. - Parliament sanctions Senate proposals for a novel Köhlbrand Bridge.
The Hamburg Senate has won approval from the Hamburg Parliament to construct a new Köhlbrand Bridge with support from a red-green majority. The CDU and AfD elected to abstain from voting, while the Left opposed the proposal. The new Köhlbrand Bridge will replace the existing structure and is set to be 20 meters higher by the early 2040s. This change is necessary not only due to the current poor condition of the old bridge but also its inadequate 53-meter clearance height, which hinders the growth in ship size according to the Senate.
The project is estimated to cost between 4.4 and 5.3 billion euros, and Hamburg is hoping to secure funding from the federal government. Demolition of the existing bridge, which currently limits heavy truck traffic, is planned for 2046.
