Crime - Paramedics attacked during operation in Neukölln
In a mission in Berlin-Neukölln, a paramedic was attacked by several people. The 47-year-old paramedic was injured in the head and then treated in the hospital as an outpatient, according to a police spokesperson. This incident was previously reported by the "B.Z."
This incident occurred in the night on Wednesday, as a German Red Cross ambulance with several paramedics was called out to the Fuldastraße around 0.30 am. There, a helplessly drunk woman was found on the sidewalk.
Disagreement over paramedic's words
According to initial investigations, a 45-year-old man became angry over the paramedic's choice of words, as the police spokesperson reported. The argument escalated and ended violently. The 45-year-old man is said to have punched and kicked the paramedic. It could not be determined which remark of the 47-year-old specifically provoked the man.
A man of the same age and another man were also present and repeatedly hit the paramedic on the back of the head with their fists. The paramedic reportedly picked up a beer bottle lying on the ground and held it threateningly towards the three attackers in self-defense.
One of the three men was able to leave the scene unnoticed. The personal details of the others have been recorded. The Violence Commissioner's Office is now investigating against them.
Shock over the attack
The chairman of the Berlin DRK Landesverband, Gudrun Sturm, reacted angrily: "Whoever attacks paramedics endangers human lives and crosses an absolutely unacceptable boundary." The police union expressed similar sentiments.
Landesbranddirektor Karsten Homrighausen stated: "I strongly condemn that it has again happened in Berlin that paramedics have been attacked." According to the fire department's statements, the violence against emergency responders has been increasing continuously. In the past year, there were reportedly 148 attacks against paramedics of the Berlin Fire Department.
The attack on the paramedic occurred in the neighborhood of Neukölln, specifically at Fuldastraße. Emergencies can be unpredictable, but the assault on a rescue worker during an emergency call is a grave crime. The Berlin Police are currently investigating the incident, focusing on three individuals involved. A statement of disapproval was issued by Gudrun Sturm, the chairman of the Berlin DRK Landesverband, expressing shock over the incident.
