Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's painting "Tanz im Varieté" from 1911, whose whereabouts were unknown for decades, has resurfaced.

Bidding Event - Painting from Kirchner's collection worth seven million reportedly discovered.

A painting by renowned artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner that went missing for decades was auctioned off in Munich last Friday for close to seven million euros. The painting titled "Dance in the Varieté" from 1911 was sold for 6.958,000 euros, a significant price increase from the initial estimated value of two to three million euros.

The painting's existence was unknown for years, but it was recently discovered in a private collection in Baden-Württemberg. Before being rediscovered, pictures of the painting were available only in black and white. Experts are now working on tracing its earlier history and whereabouts. The auction house Ketterer reports that the painting was exhibited shortly after its creation and again in the 1920s. There are also photographs of these exhibitions, as disclosed by the auction house. Kirchner himself had captured several images of the artwork.

The painting, measuring 120 x 145 cm, is one of the larger-sized pieces in his oeuvre and depicts his fascination with dance. It is considered one of the last works Kirchner created in Dresden, depicting the theme of circus and variety. Kirchner was one of the co-founders of the Artists' Association "Die Brücke" in 1905, alongside Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and Fritz Bleyl.

Kirchner's art celebrates the expressive potential of the dawning modern era and the joys of life. His work is characterized by its vivid colors, powerful brushstrokes, and the dynamic rhythms and forms in his paintings. "Dance in the Varieté" is a fine example of Kirchner's avant-garde style.
