Health - PAF: Number of nursing trainees increases again in Bavaria

According to preliminary data, more young people in Bavaria have signed a training contract for a nursing profession again this year. The number is expected to have risen by 3.4 percent compared to the previous year, reported the Pflegeausbildungsfonds Bayern GmbH (PAF). This is the result of an extrapolation of preliminary data. The fund set up by the Free State of Bavaria organizes the financing of nursing training. In the previous year, the number of nursing trainees fell significantly. The Federal Statistical Office reported a nationwide decline of seven percent, with a similar rate in Bavaria.

The PAF Advisory Board sees the new figures as a "slight trend reversal". It is to be hoped that a similarly positive trend will also be seen in other federal states, explained PAF deputy managing director Christoph Kahle. The Federal Statistical Office has announced that nationwide data will be published in spring 2024.

According to the Nursing Training Fund, it is also positive that fewer nursing trainees are ending their training prematurely. The dropout rate fell from 29% in 2021 to 25% last year.

Bavaria's Health Minister Judith Gerlach (CSU) also finds the figures in Bavaria encouraging. They show "that the generalist nursing training is bearing fruit", said Gerlach. Since 2020, the previously separate training paths of nursing, paediatric nursing and geriatric nursing have been combined into a single training course.

Supporters of the reform argued that this generalist training would make nursing more attractive overall. However, there had also been warnings that young people who were only interested in one particular branch of nursing could be put off.
