Özdemir on the abolition of agricultural diesel subsidies: "Pain threshold exceeded"
The planned cuts to the agricultural diesel subsidy and the motor vehicle tax exemption for agricultural and forestry machinery are part of the Federal Government's budget consolidation following the ruling of the Federal Constitutional Court. The German Farmers' Association (DBV) has called on farmers to demonstrate against the cuts in Berlin on Monday. Özdemir will be taking part and intends to give a speech.
The Minister emphasized in the "Morgenmagazin" that he did not want to ignore the necessary savings efforts. However, he said that the removal of tax relief on agricultural diesel was wrong. He had already made alternative savings proposals internally.
Özdemir said that politics had to "take the people with you". However, this is not the case with the parallel abolition of the agricultural diesel subsidy and the motor vehicle tax exemption for agricultural and forestry machinery planned by the traffic light coalition. "We are overburdening them."
Farmers provide people with food and a large proportion of their produce is exported, Özdemir added. The planned cuts would lead to "worsening competitive conditions for German farmers". There are also simply no alternative drive types available to farmers. Their heavy machinery could not be powered by electric motors.
