Fortuna Düsseldorf kicked off the 2. Bundesliga with a win against SV Darmstadt 98, winning 2-0 away.

In front of 17,810 spectators at the sold-out Stadion am Böllenfalltor, Düsseldorf went ahead through an own goal by SVD defender Aleksandar Vukotic (55'). Substitute Tim Rossmann sealed the victory (86'). Just prior, 17-year-old Darmstadt player Othmane El Idrissi was sent off after a VAR review for a professional foul (83').

In the first half, the game was balanced between the two teams. After Düsseldorf took the lead, the game opened up.
