Traffic - Overtaking maneuver despite ban: Two drivers seriously injured

At attempting to overtake the same car on a weekend afternoon, two drivers, both 45 years old, were heavily injured. Both were taken to a hospital by helicopter, as the Neubrandenburg police announced late on Saturday evening.

Apparently, a 45-year-old driver on a country road disregarded the overtaking ban and tried to overtake the car in front of him. He failed to notice that another 45-year-old driver was also attempting an overtaking maneuver from behind. The two vehicles collided sideways between the towns of Jagерhof and Waren. The car that was originally behind swerved off the road and hit a tree. The car in the middle collided with the leading one.

The driver and passenger in the leading car, as well as the passenger's 14-year-old grandchild, remained unharmed. All three vehicles had to be towed away, and the road was closed for three and a half hours. The damage amounted to 60,000 Euro according to police reports.

A 0.82 promille value was measured in the breath test of one of the 45-year-olds. Reports of traffic endangerment and bodily harm were filed against both 45-year-olds.

  1. The accident took place on a quiet stretch of road in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, near Neubrandenburg.
  2. The police in Neubrandenburg advised drivers to avoid the area due to the prolonged closure of the road due to the traffic accidents.
  3. During the investigation, it was revealed that both drivers had been driving their respective cars for several hours without taking a break, contributing to their lack of attention during the overtaking maneuvers.
  4. The helicopter, which was stationed at the nearby police station in Neubrandenburg, was urgently dispatched to transport the injured men to the hospital.
  5. Witnesses reported that the two cars involved were traveling at high speeds, making the execution of overtaking maneuvers highly risky.
