Weather - Overflowing cellars and flooded streets: Danger of thunderstorms
According to the German Weather Service, the Free State is expected to face partial strong thunderstorms again, starting from Thursday night through Friday. There is a possibility of thunder and heavy rain, up to 25 liters per square meter per hour, in some areas. The northern part of Bavaria is likely to be affected the most, with possible heavy rain up to 40 liters per square meter within a short time.
Additionally, hail and gusts of wind up to 70 kilometers per hour cannot be ruled out. Temperatures are predicted to rise to warm levels of 23 to 29 degrees Celsius on Thursday. A moderate and somewhat refreshing southwest wind is also expected. The thunderstorm tendency is expected to decrease significantly during the night on Friday. Some areas may experience clear skies, while others may have fog. Friday is expected to be similarly warm, with temperatures up to 30 degrees Celsius. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are also possible.
In Mittelfranken, thunderstorms during the morning hours have already caused flooded streets in some places, such as Nuremberg and the Weißenburg area, according to a police spokesperson. On the railway line between Munich and Ingolstadt, there have been delays due to a damaged relay cabin at Dachau caused by several lightning strikes.
Already on Wednesday evening and during the night on Thursday, heavy thunderstorms left their mark in several parts of Bavaria. The Autobahn 96 in the Landsberg am Lech district was flooded due to heavy rainfall and had to be closed for several hours. The water reached knee-height on the road in the direction of Munich.
One car got stuck in the water and had to be towed away. There were also flooded sections on the road in the direction of Lindau, but traffic could still be redirected to the shoulder. In total, there were significant traffic disruptions and a traffic jam of nearly eleven kilometers in length. Fire department personnel were on hand to help drain the water. Afterward, the heavily contaminated road was cleaned.
In Augsburg and the surrounding districts, heavy rainfall caused numerous flooded basements and flooded underpasses. The fire department reported being on site at many locations to pump water out of basements. Several underpasses were completely flooded and impassable for vehicles. Fire department personnel also had to rescue several people who had driven into flooded areas.
In Aschaffenburg, lightning strikes caused a fire and disrupted the main railway station. According to a railway spokesperson, the Aschaffenburg station was affected starting around 17:30 p.m. on Thursday. This led to delays and cancellations in local and long-distance rail traffic. The German Railways offered buses as a replacement for stranded passengers. The disruption was reportedly resolved late in the evening.
The attic of a row house in Aschaffenburg reportedly caught fire on a Wednesday evening, according to police, likely due to a lightning strike.
