Combatting right-wing extremism - Over ten thousand individuals rally for democracy.
Over ten thousand individuals gathered in Leipzig and Dresden on a Saturday to stand against right-wing extremism and in support of democracy. Irena Rudolph-Kokot, a co-organizer of the "Hand in Hand for Democracy and Human Rights" event, emphasized that their rally was held "one day before the European and local elections" to "wake up people to vote and deliver a strong message for democracy and human rights." In Leipzig, the organizers mentioned around 15,000 people attending, while the police reported 12,500 participants. The event remained peaceful as noted by a police spokesperson on Sunday.
Concurrently, on Saturday afternoon, the "Action Alliance 'We are the Berlin Wall Dresden'" advocated for a demonstration as part of their "Stop right-wing extremism - Defend democracy" initiative on Theaterplatz in Dresden. Based on the numbers from the organizers and the police, several thousand individuals participated in the rally and the subsequent march through the Old and New Town. The gathering and procession were also peaceful, as reported on Sunday.
Remarkably, the renowned actress Sandra Hüller, known for her international success, addressed the crowd in Leipzig. The 46-year-old asserted, "Don't let yourself be swayed by the rough talk of the right, by inaccuracy and violence in the language that serves merely one purpose: to incite insecurity and division."
With a rare public appearance outside of her acting career, Hüller prompted people to vote. In 2020, Hüller was nominated for an Oscar for her leading role in "Anatomy of a Murder." Born in Suhl and currently residing in Leipzig, Hüller expressed her views before the demonstrators marched through the city center of Leipzig.
