Over one million cruise passengers in Hamburg for the first time
The Port of Hamburg has recorded more than one million cruise passengers for the first time this year. On Sunday, the one millionth cruise passenger was welcomed when the "MSC Euribia" called at the Steinwerder terminal, Cruise Gate Hamburg GmbH (CGH) announced on Monday. "The cruise industry has recovered quickly after the pandemic - and Hamburg has developed into a year-round attractive cruise port, especially thanks to winter cruising," said CGH Managing Director Simone Maraschi.
The million mark is likely to be significantly exceeded by the end of 2023. Around 30 more calls are expected by then. This would make the 2023 cruise year the strongest season ever in the Hanseatic city, with around 280 calls in total.
Hamburg's Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) emphasized the importance of the cruise industry as a key pillar of the Hanseatic city's economy. "Many cultural, sports and leisure activities are made possible by tourism and are equally attractive for Hamburg residents and our guests from abroad."
CGH manages and allocates berths for cruise ships at the Steinwerder, Altona, Baakenhöft and, from 2025, probably also in HafenCity. It relies on a shore-side power supply for the cruise ships at all berths. This has already been in place in Altona since 2016, and all cruise terminals are to be equipped with shore power by 2025.
The Port of Hamburg's strong performance in cruise tourism has also led to an increase in shipping activities, with more cargo being transported to and from the city. Moreover, Hamburg is exploring the potential of offering cruise tours that combine city sightseeing with ocean voyages, aiming to attract more visitors and boost the local economy.
