Over half of the electricity comes from renewable sources.

Germany's reliance on wind power as its primary energy source has re-emerged, although coal remains a substantial contributor as well.

Germany's Electricity Production - Over half of the electricity comes from renewable sources.

In Germany, green energy is taking over like a storm! With renewable sources contributing to a whopping 58.4% of the total electricity generated in the first quarter of the year, things are looking greener than ever. The Federal Statistical Office announced this on a Thursday, sharing the news that never before have wind, water, solar, and biogas played such a vital role.

The big player here? You guessed it - wind power. Dominating the game, it made up for 38.5% of the electricity produced in Germany in Q1 of 2024.

Coal, on the other hand, is slowly losing its charm. It's stuck at #2 with a 23% share, but its use has seen a considerable decrease. Compared to the first quarter of 2023, the coal-fired power generation dropped an astounding 28.2%, dropping approximately 11.0 billion kilowatt-hours. As a result, fossil fuels like coal and natural gas didn't play a significant part in the energy mix anymore.

But wait, it gets better. There's been a notable 25.4% decrease in conventional energy sources, contrasted by a nifty 11.6% increase in renewables. It might not sound like a lot, but it equals to a reduction of 7.5% in the total electricity generated in Germany between the first quarters of 2023 and 2024. And that's not even taking into account the gigantic leap from 121.5 billion kilowatt-hours to 131.4 billion kilowatt-hours in 2023! These are some pretty surreal numbers.

  1. In the first quarter of 2024, Germany set a record value for power generation from green electricity sources, surpassing the previous year's 121.5 billion kilowatt-hours by 10 billion kilometres.
  2. Interestingly, Destatis, the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, reported that more than half of Germany's electricity now comes from renewable sources, with wind power accounting for a significant 38.5%.
  3. Due to this shift towards renewable energy, conventional energy sources like coal and natural gas have seen a significant drop in their share of power generation, allowing Germany to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.
  4. This surge in green electricity and decrease in conventional power sources has a ripple effect on the electricity market, making Germany a global leader in harnessing wind power and embracing a sustainable energy future.
