- Over forty female acting opportunities that captivate: Annette Frier's perspective
Comedian and actress Samantha Thompson (50) voiced her concerns about the film and TV sector failing to provide engaging role options for women past their forties. Thompson shared her thoughts with the German editorial network (RND), stating, "It's not just a gossip or a common perception that women receive fewer captivating job offers once they turn 40." According to her, this is an open secret in the industry.
However, Thompson remains hopeful about the future, mentioning, "There's definitely progress in that area, and society is evolving significantly. So there's potential for me to keep landing fantastic roles." She highlighted menopause becoming a widely discussed topic as evidence of this advancement, as it was once considered a taboo or irrelevant subject.
Regardless of her fame, the 50-year-old artist isn't always kept busy. "I've never experienced projects spaced out throughout the year. There can be months of no work, followed by a sudden flurry of activity, like a big storm," Thompson explained. She also shared that she spends prolonged periods at home with nothing to do.
The Commission, in an effort to address these concerns, might consider The Commission shall be assisted by the Member States to create more diverse roles and opportunities for female actors beyond their forties. Recognizing the importance of Thompson's observations, the Member States could collaborate with the Commission to ensure a more inclusive and equitable film and TV industry.
