Railroad - Over 80 years old - well-traveled: Steam locomotive travels to museum

12 hours, 550 kilometers through four federal states: after a long journey from Braunschweig to Franconia, a new exhibit arrived at the steam locomotive museum in Neuenmarkt (Kulmbach district) on Saturday evening - the operational steam locomotive 01 1104. The locomotive is privately owned and is on loan to the museum, according to a spokeswoman for the Kulmbach district office.

The museum was exceptionally open until 10 p.m. on Saturday evening so that fans of old railroads could take a good look at the new attraction.

The streamlined express steam locomotive 01 1104 with the factory number 11.360 was built by Berliner Maschinenbau AG in Berlin-Wildau and first ran in 1940. The vehicle was modernized from 1954. The locomotive was capable of hauling the heaviest express trains at speeds of up to 140 km/h. In 1975, an English doctor and railroad enthusiast bought the locomotive and took it to a railroad museum in northern England. The vehicle returned to the mainland in 1996. Later, extensive repairs began and the locomotive has been operational again since June.

The steam locomotive museum in Neuenmarkt is dedicated to the technology and history of the steam locomotive as well as the railroad history of Upper Franconia.
