- Over 70s voted least for AfD
In the European elections, voters aged 70 and above in Saxony cast their ballots least frequently for the AfD. Only 23 percent chose the party, which is around 8 percentage points lower than the statewide average of 31.8 percent, according to data from the State Statistical Office. The highest vote share was recorded among those aged 45 to 60 (38 percent).
Among voters aged 70 and above, the CDU was the most popular choice, with 31.8 percent (compared to 21.8 percent statewide). The Christian Democrats performed worst among the youngest voters aged 16 to 25, with 8.7 percent, trailing behind The Left, which achieved its best result in this age group with 9.8 percent.
The Greens suffered the largest losses compared to 2019 among voters aged 16 to 25, with a decrease of 16 percentage points (2024: 7 percent, statewide: 5.9 percent). They achieved their best result among voters aged 25 to 35 (11.1 percent).
The BSW found the greatest support among the oldest voters (17.1 percent, statewide: 12.6 percent). The SPD also performed best in this age group (11.1 percent, statewide: 6.9 percent).
Notably, there was a high proportion of votes for other parties among younger voters. Statewide, this was 13.7 percent, but it was 28.5 percent among those under 25 and 27.5 percent among those aged up to 35.
Despite the lower turnout for the AfD among voters aged 70 and above in the European elections, the Green Party experienced the largest losses in this age group compared to 2019. Interestingly, the Green Party achieved its best results among voters aged 25 to 35.
