Quantifiable data analysis - Over 6900 individuals have acquired citizenship in the northern region.

Nearly 7,000 individuals in Schleswig-Holstein have become German citizens throughout the year, the Statistical Office North disclosed in Hamburg on a Thursday. This amounts to 6,914 naturalized residents, representing a rise of nearly 33% from the preceding year, which equates to 1,713 more individuals.

Interestingly, individuals from Syria witnessed a significant surge in naturalization numbers. In 2023, around 3,651 Syrians obtained German citizenship, marking a 42% increase year-on-year. Syrians now constitute almost half of the newly naturalized individuals in the area. This rise in numbers was largely due to the influx of Syrian refugees from 2014 to 2016, indicating that these individuals have been living in Germany for over eight years.

Following Syria, there were 460 people from Iraq, 392 people from Afghanistan, and 234 individuals from Iran. Ukranians ranked seventh with 146 naturalized citizens.

To naturalize, individuals must have legally resided in Germany for at least eight years with unlimited residence permits. They must also demonstrate their dedication to the liberal democratic principles of Germany's Basic Law and, generally, forfeit their previous nationality.
