Education - Over 3100 new apprenticeship contracts already concluded in the skilled trades sector
A few weeks before the start of the training year 2024/2025, around 3100 apprentices in Saxony have already signed a new training contract. By the end of June, there were 128 more contracts (plus 4.3%) than at the same time last year, according to the Saxon Chamber of Crafts. The most popular apprenticeship was undoubtedly that of Automotive Mechatronics Technician (686 apprentices). This was followed by Electronics Technician (268), Sanitary Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Technician (221), Carpenter (166), and Painter/Varnisher (127).
More than double the number of apprentices chose the occupation of Food Retail Salesperson - there were 109 in this year compared to 50 the previous year. A strong increase of 60% was also seen in butchers (35 apprentices).
Despite the increase, more than 700 training places in over 80 professions remained unfilled according to the initial reports. Interested parties can apply for professions such as Sanitary Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Technician, Automotive Mechatronics Technician, or Mason. There are still places available on the Crafts Chamber's Apprenticeship Exchange for less common or less well-known professions, such as Well Driller, Glassmaker, or Surface Coater. Many training companies also offer short-term "taster apprenticeships" during the summer holidays for the undecided, allowing them to gain insights into the professional world.
The upcoming training year in Dresden is expected to see a continued focus on technical professions, with Automotive Mechatronics Technician and Electronics Technician remaining popular choices. However, the labor market in Saxony's craft sector is also seeking candidates for less common professions like Well Driller, Glassmaker, and Surface Coater, offering training opportunities through the Crafts Chamber's Apprenticeship Exchange. To help individuals explore different vocational paths, several companies provide short-term "taster apprenticeships" during the summer holiday period, providing insights into various labor market sectors and contributing to climate-friendly education through sustainable craft practices.
