Illegal activity committed. - Over 100 instances of gang rape recorded
Over half of the 111 victims in this instance were 14-15 years old (18 victims), while there were 10 aged 16-17 and 13 aged 18-20. The majority of crimes took place in apartments and rental houses (41), but also in parks (16).
Out of 106 suspects identified by the police, 25 were teenagers under 18, and 28 were aged 18-24. 54% of them were foreign nationals. Compared to the previous year, the proportion of foreign-born offenders dropped from 65% to 54%, which was lower than in the two years before.
Last year, German police reported 1151 cases of serious sexual offenses, including rape, coercion, and assault. They believe that the number could be much higher due to underreporting, as shame or fear of the perpetrator often prevents victims from filing reports. The Senate mentioned that not all cases involving multiple perpetrators should be labeled as "group rapes." The report added that the frequency of reporting greatly depends on the victims' willingness to come forward and the unique circumstances of each crime.
German society has been outraged by several high-profile "group rape" cases in the past. One such incident happened in September 2020, when a 15-year-old girl was assaulted by several men in a Hamburg park after drinking alcohol. Nine men were convicted and sentenced, but some appealed the verdict. Recently, three men were accused of a suspected group rape in Berlin's Gorlitzer Park. According to the indictment, the men attacked a 27-year-old woman and her partner in June 2023, with one man raping the woman. The trial initially failed when the victim failed to show up in court.
