Christmas tradition - Over 100,000 letters in the Engelskirchen Christmas post office
The mail is piling up at the Christkindpost branch in Engelskirchen: more than 100,000 wish lists have been received so far, reported Britta Töllner, spokeswoman for the Christkindpost branch in Engelskirchen near Cologne. "We are always amazed and delighted by the original wording and wishes," she said. We receive questions such as: "Can you also wish for real animals?"
Children often think about the situation in the world. A girl called Hermine asked for the gifts to be sent on to Africa. Clara wanted "no more people to go hungry". A boy wished for peace in Ukraine, Israel and the whole world as well as "that everyone has food and drink and a place to live". The spectrum of wishes ranges from precisely described products to those that cost nothing: from a Playstation to striped socks to a walk with grandma.
Anyone who writes by December 20 will still receive a reply, promises the wish list office in the town in the Bergisches Land region. Every letter is read and answered. Last year, letters arrived in Engelskirchen from 48 different countries. "The Christ Child answers in twelve different languages," explained the Christmas post office.
